  GORDON STONE
HIGHLAND SPRINGS RESIDENT ARMY
BY ALICE STONE, WIDOW
Gordon and I were born and raised in Minnesota where we lived until 1960. We married in 1949 and only left when his job with 3M required that he move to Dallas. He left the company and started a highly successful optical equipment company. He sold it and we retired to a lake house in East Texas where we lived for 20 years before coming to Highland Springs.
Gordon did not choose to make the military his career. He served for 3 years in the 87th Airborne and retired as a sergeant. He was a paratrooper with about 11 jumps and ended up in Japan with the Occupational Army after the war ended. His job was to help restore that country after the war and one of his memorable experiences was that he marched past Hirohito's palace with MacArthur. He spoke very little of his experiences, but he made many friends in the service and some actually visited him at Highland Springs.
