JIM ATKINS
HIGHLAND SPRINGS RESIDENT, AIR FORCE
I served on the Air Force four years, 1961-1965 during the early years of the Vietnam War.
After completing basic and technical training at Lackland AFB and Kessler AFB, I was assigned to
ENT AFB and Peterson Field in Colorado Springs, HQ of the Strategic Air Command.
Subsequently, I was sent to Southeast Asia 1st Mobile Communications Group at Clark AFB in the Philippines. From there, I was deployed to multiple points throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, Singapore, Australia and Vietnam.
My role was to provide ground communications systems for US and allied forces in support of the war in Vietnam.
I was honorably discharged October 1965. I was not a war hero. They didn't come home. I just did my job.
