ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
It Takes a Village! And I was blessed that these individuals came forward and together to help create The History of Veterans at Highland Springs. When I made this commitment to myself and the Veterans, I had no clue about such things as online flip books, or many other technical requirements, or that there would be such an enthusiastic response with so many stories, or that each story would take many hours of correspondence and editing. I would now like to acknowledge the following individuals who volunteered to become my village and help make The History of Veterans at Highland Springs a reality.
First, I must thank my son Lang Zerner. As a senior technical architect for a global business software company, he applied his technical skills to just about every aspect of The History of Veterans at Highland Springs. He spent weeks of unpaid volunteering, from launching me at the very beginning to putting the final touches to this book. I could have never managed without him and his support, encourage- ment, and patience.
I am especially grateful to Pete Weyrauch, Chair of the Veterans Affairs Group. It would have been an impossible task for me to contact all Highland Springs Veterans without his concise roster. And his help with research on the Group and Veterans Memorial Park as well as the compilation of the Index has been invaluable. I also thank him for his help in editing Veterans' photos and stories. Most of all, I thank him for always being there for me when needed and partnering in the quest to make this project happen. It was truly a joy to work with him.
Doug Githens came into my life when I was wondering how I could possibly tackle the production end. The son of Highland Springs Veteran Edward Githens, he is a Creative Director and Designer and volunteered to spend many hours providing his graphic design and printing expertise to this project. I thank him for formatting suggestion and producing the final publication in multiple formats. Doug's advice helped me overcome the many practical questions that arise when creating a complex document completely from scratch.
Glee Pitney, my former neighbor, was involved as a principal with the Veterans group from the very beginning of Veteran activities at Highland Springs. It would have been far too difficult to document the early days without his knowledge and input. I thank him so much for sharing his notes and facts and for correcting other information.
